Find the Artist Within

Can anyone be an artist? People admiring my work often say, "I could never do that!" I say, "Yes, you can!" Eight years ago, during a very difficult time in my career in finance (Downsizings, layoffs - let's not talk about it, OK?), my company sent me to a development workshop for female executives. I came out of a particularly thought-provoking discussion group and penned the following very prophetic free verse.

Why Do We Need Creativity?

Creativity is central to the management of our individual lives, but in modern times few people are able to access this as a resource. Alan Watts writes in The Wisdom of Insecurity:"We have allowed brain thinking to develop and dominate our lives out of all proportion to 'instinctual wisdom'; which we are allowing to slump into atrophy.

The Creative Entrepreneur - Best Of All Worlds
Being a creative spirit in this cold hard world can sometimes feel like it's a liability rather than the gift that it actually is. This is constantly reinforced by the way society always showcases and boxes the creative people as loopy, crazy or nut cases in every medium and form they can. These stereotypes are just that, stereotypes! Don't be fooled into thinking that you must act crazy to be a truly successful creative. Great art, whether it is painting, visual, writing, photography or any other creative outlet offers us a life full of meaning. Great successful creatives are those who have been able to achieve a balance between the intellectual and the emotional aspects of their creative being and have somehow used this to create and fashion a world where they are able to not only support themselves but succeed beyond their wildest dreams! How has this been achieved?

If You Had the Power to Create Your Life, With No Limits - What Would You Imagine?
If you had the power to create your life, with no limits - what would you imagine? Would you imagine a world in which you focus and accept your current reality? Or would you let your imagination run wild and create the utmost enjoyable and deliberate world to live in? We would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would waste such a precious resource as imagination on such mundane things as perpetuating their current reality. All of us have the power of creation within us, our imaginations are limitless and without boundaries. Why waste this thinking about things as they currently stand? Unless of course, you are already living the exact life that you wanted for yourself.

Maintaining Creative Vision In A World Filled With Noise
Without a creative and artistic vision the images that we create are just that - images. Dull, lifeless, pointless and without meaning. This is true regardless of which medium you use to create the final image. How many times have you come across images that are technically 100% correct, clear, sharp, perfectly exposed and even composed and yet there is just no soul behind it? I see these every day. If the goal of the creator was to practice their technical skills then yep - they succeeded. Take a closer look at those images that capture you and draw you in. What is it about these images that provoke that result?

Passion & Intensity - A Focus On Creativity
Contrary to the modern belief that our emotional state is a root cause of creativity - or lack of it, is the understanding that it is our intensity of passion that fuels the creative mind. Whether you are happy, sad, frustrated, and angry or any other emotion within sight will actually not bring on the creative juices and results. The one underlying factor that seems to bring out the creative in all of us is the intense passion that we have for our particular subject. It's very rare that you will be in an unhappy state when you are dealing with something that you are intensely passionate about therefore happiness, or at least a happier disposition, seems to go hand-in-hand with creativity, even though the overlying emotional state you are in may be something other than happy!

Creative Photography - A Project Based Approach To Unleash Creativity
A lot of people that I teach ask me about creativity or more accurately, the lack of creativity. One of the best approaches that I have learned over time is to use a project based approach. Allowing yourself to only do your work when you are motivated will not get you the results that you are after. You need to focus and be putting in the work before the motivation kicks in.

An Open Letter To All Creatives Out There
This is one thing that happens in most industries at least at the very early stages of people's careers. Unfortunately if you happen to be in a creative industry it appears to have become the 'norm' regardless of how far you have come in your career. So what exactly is this dreaded norm that I'm talking about? It's the assumption that what we create as creative individuals and by that I mean people who are actors, designers, musicians, film, photography, artists and a hundred other creative fields will work for free. A sentiment that seems to be shared among most of the public.

What The Heck Is A Successful Life Anyway?
So what exactly is the definition of living a successful life? To me, the definition of being successful is focusing on what's important to you each and every day. Break The Shackles Of Self Deception
Deception. It's become the one universal aspect of humanity at this point in our history. We deceive. Mostly we deceive without actually knowing that we are deceiving, others but mostly ourselves. We've become conditioned to play the parts that others in society have deemed that we should be playing, rather than finding those things in life that matter to us and becoming more of ourselves in the process. Growing up. It really is no wonder that we are now moving into an age in which more and more people are questioning and trying to find an answer on how to achieve their dreams and goals. The revolution has well and truly begun, even if it's still at an early stage. Revolution? What revolution?

I'd be absolutely filthy rich if I had one cent for every time that I've heard the words that creativity doesn't pay the bills or some variant of the same. 5 Minute Creativity Kick
The beast that I am constantly writing about, creativity can sometimes be likened to a bear. Starving Creative? You're Doing It Wrong
Apart from small talk about the weather, the first question that is usually asked by people when they're introduced is - 'What do you do?' Now, if we go by the statistics alone, coming in at 90%+ would be people who actually hate what they do for a living. So why are we so interested in this? At least with the weather there's a chance that I might pick up a little bit of upcoming 'hail' this afternoon. If I myself hate what I do, why would it be the first thing that I want others to know about me?

Visualizing is a MUST when you are about to accomplish something greater than you could ever imagine. It is crucial to always look above and beyond where others can only see a few feet ahead of them. You are making changes unconsciously and succeeding at it very well.

Call it bluffing, faking, make belief, whatever you want. It doesn't really matter. As long as you believe it will happen, that's what counts the most. If you think you are poor, you will stay poor and nothing good will come out of it. If you think you are rich, but yet, haven't reached wealth yet, you will be on your way to reaching wealth. I am not saying to go and spend money that you do not have, but prepare for money to come and bless you with wealth and abundance. It is based on your thoughts and belief. Beauty From You to Me - Acknowledge That Beauty Is in Everyone and in Everything
Beauty discovered or uncovered, is everywhere, if you seek, you'll find. Whether in an amazing song, dance, or in the eyes of a newborn child, you can find beauty everywhere. Enjoy the view that your life has to offer you! A gorgeous sunrise, an emerald-green beach, an amazing garden or even in a fantastic poem or rhyme, it's all subjective and strictly up to you to discover what you find exciting and beautiful! The beauty that YOU resonate to me is worthy of my praise and appreciation. In appreciation for your ability to transfer a hug, smile, or compliment exemplifying your inner beauty is amazing! New discovery, at any time, or in any place is refreshing. Isn't it appreciable to enjoy your home after you have spent a long time cooking or cleaning? Beauty can also be found in the people that we meet everyday; like a pioneer seeking adventure. Enjoy a witty conversation with a new friend. Listen to Your Daydreams, Authorize Them to Ignite a Blaze of Creation or Innovation
Many discoveries and inventions were first processed, by inventors or creators, during the times that they allowed themselves to daydream. To daydream may seem unnecessary, though, it's the mind that decides when, if,and why it needs to send you and me messages that are out-of-the-ordinary or whimsical by category. Can you imagine wanting to eat meat on-the-go without bread? The people, or person who invented bread gave humanity one of the most important innovative creations, by mankind; even recognized as a staple food, in the bible, which declares the significance and life-altering importance of this dreamed invention. Daydreams have also been responsible for great poetry, books, painting's and for so many creative things! I cannot even begin to imagine life without the innate ability to daydream a creation into existence. Landing on the moon was also a daydream,or a dream, no less, and of course, we are all glad to see how well that turned out. Before too long, our dreams of landing us on Mars, will be a reality! Make your daydreams a reality and be prepared to see how your creative mind can design what you have always aspired to live, or to manifest.

Relaxation As Part of the Creative Process
The environment and the mind are constantly emitting impulses or providing stimuli to the body via the nervous system, which consists of the electrical circuits that run throughout the body. The mind is constantly providing orders to various body parts to get them to do its bidding while the environment is a gigantic theater of sensory input without end. This makes the body a conduit for the flows going into the mind from the environment and back out to the environment and from the environment coming into the mind and back out from the mind to the environment. All of this flowing and non-stop sensory input keeps the body in a state of enervation, which causes damage, slowing, overloading, and burn out. Enervation is simply when the body feels drained of energy or experiences exhaustion from too much stimulation (overloaded circuits). For artists, relaxation is the only method of reversing the effects of enervation and is therefore a vital practice to achieve creative longevity. True relaxation means refraining from artificial forms of stimulation and sensory input to experience one's self and one's environment in a natural state.

Catharsis and the Creative Process
Creativity is the most intense path to catharsis. The mind must connect to the emotions and form an idea into a physical shape such as a book or painting. The mind and the emotions must unite into a single line of intention that fills the work of art completely with a singular creative purpose. Whether it's a new recipe, clothing design, or symphony, the creation must receive and retain the full intention of your concentrated effort. The result of any act of creation should always be the physical form of aesthetic desire, which is the drive to see something become real that only exists in your imagination. As we fill an aesthetic product with our desire to make it real, it forms a vacuum within us that is steadily filled with more ideas of a similar quality to the original. The filling of this creative vacuum in human terms is felt as a surge of inspiration or illumination in spiritual circles. Others report it as a spiritual awakening, the seeing of transcendental visions, or catharsis.

Fear of Risk Can Be a Creativity Cruncher
