Make the Amazement Factor one criterion for choosing ideas to write about. Self-promotion is integral for author success today. This article will show you why. What if you wanted to open a Sally's Sewing Shoppe? Wouldn't it make sense that you knew about sewing? Have I got news for you! Most of it good. Some not so good. But let's start with the good news. In today's high-tech world there are two popular ways to give birth to that novel or how-to book you've been writing in your mind for all those years: One is called self-publishing - aka print-on-demand or POD - where you end up with printed books in hand. The other is to create an eBook, which means you'll be selling access to an electronic file rather than to printed books. They say that 82% of Americans would like to write a book. Tens of thousands of them do. Authors have a large choice when it comes to promotional techniques to get their books in front of prospective readers. Nothing really comers close to the power of the internet for promoting a product. One technique that can produce amazing results is the newsletter or ezine as it is sometimes known. Do you want people in your social networks talking about your new book? Host a book contest! With the right prizes, this promotional tactic can generate book sales, blog subscribers, Twitter followers, or Facebook fans (or all of the above). A big part of an authors ability to have a successful relationship with their fans resides in building an email list. The email list can be used to interact with their fans and create excitement about current and forthcoming book releases. In this article we look at what an email list is. How to build one and how to use it to significantly increase your book sales. Understanding the writer's market is an essential skill for traditionally published authors. This ensures your book gets past publication, and even more important, it will ensure your book gets sold. In this dicey economy, new and experienced writers are self-publishing their work. Choosing a title and subtitle can take days or weeks. What are your criteria? Amazon's Kindle ebook reading device has taken the world by storm. There are millions of these devices in use and sales of electronic Kindle books are now outselling traditional paperbacks. All of this means that more and more people are thinking about publishing their new masterpieces on Amazon. Print on demand (POD) capabilities have revolutionized publishing. Beginning authors are turning to POD to see their work in print. Experienced authors are turning to POD because of its advantages. This article details some of them. I use a combination of cover design methods for my 16 eBooks (2 more in a few weeks) and the same for my POD (print on demand) ones as well. With print eBooks you have to keep in mind the back as well as the front cover, plus spine text if you have a thick enough book. Been there, done that! A couple of times, actually. And I'm here to tell you that writing a book - difficult as it may seem - is the easy part...unless you'll be happy owning the only copy of your book in print. "Book writing" in and of itself can be a truly satisfying experience. Several years ago, I sold my share of the west coast ad agency I founded. A non-compete agreement precluded me from doing what I knew and loved. I was not ready to retire and did not want to stop creating. So like others before me, I set out to write a novel. After all, we all have one in us. Right? Most authors have traditionally used offline strategies to create buzz for their new book. These methods typically entail striving to gain coverage in the local press, sending out press releases and holding public sessions to talk about the book. These methods are certainly costly and may not reach as many people as an emerging author may like to. Social media has changed this, and emerging authors can now access millions of potential readers and buyers. The modern generation is open to newer ideas. They are curious and often interested to learn new things. This makes them an ideal target of many aspiring writers who want their work to be acknowledged. Many people are aware that writing on a particular area of interest or experience can potentially be beneficial for them if this can be brought to the masses in a way that gives them a chance at monetization. This is the so-called online experience. Once they follow a set of guidelines to arrive at a marketable copy, the actual avenues they choose online are very much at their discretion. Once the path has been burnt into the grass and finds its economic return, the writer will be motivated to produce more and with better quality. This article summarises the factors that need to be taken into account when deciding to put up your own downloadable digital product, especially Ebooks and infoproducts, or even other items classifiable as digital downloads such as software, music and so on, for sale at existing websites that have already established a large traffic volume. In a world of fiction often full of recycled ideas, it's always a pleasure to encounter a story that's truly unique. Frank Peretti manages to capture originality in his new novel, Illusion, in bookstores March 6th. As suggested by its title, Illusion's plot hinges on that which is contrary to initial perception. Gone are the days when you needed either a book deal or a large sum of money to publish a book. Self-publishing is no longer seen as just "vanity publishing"; it's a legitimate professional way to get your ideas into print. And now, with the Kindle and iPad making e-books mainstream, you don't even need it in print! But that doesn't mean it's all plain sailing. Traditional publishing does have some advantages, so if you do decide to take the self-publishing route, make sure you get those benefits in other ways. Writing a book is hard work. According to dictionary.com, "[a Library] is a place set apart to contain books, periodicals, and other material for reading, viewing, listening, study, or reference, as a room, set of rooms, or building where books may be read or borrowed". The library can be a place for free reading or referencing of books or it can also be a place for paid membership reading/borrowing of books: Some books may be available for free to read while some may be available as part of a paid service. If you have a traditional publisher, it's probably helping with the marketing, but maybe not all that much, or maybe not at all. So it's critical that you step up and do your part. And if you're self-published, then it's all on you. So what's your plan? Sometime after signing the contract, and banking the first trounce of my advance, another document arrived from my publishers. I seem to remember spending a good few seconds reading it, ticking all the boxes, signing it, and sending a copy back as requested. What I'd filled in was the publicity agreement for my book. And I'd agreed to do everything. This wasn't a problem. My local newspaper (I had friends there anyway), perhaps local radio would be interested? That might be fun... I am one hundred percent Irish. To be truly successful these days it is very important for an writer to build an author website. The website or blog is where your readers, future and current, can connect to you and your work. Your website will be your best promotional tool. Which would YOU rather read, books or ebooks? Interesting question, isn't it? I can not tell you how many times I've heard something on these lines: "I just received a bad review. Readers have a right to their opinion, but [FILL IN THE BLANK WITH SOMETHING NEGATIVE]... Will you go to Amazon and check that the review wasn't helpful?" Finally, after an excruciatingly long wait, your book is released to the public. You're still basking in the glow of being an author and suddenly, along comes an invitation to the first of many book signings at a bookstore. Now what? When it comes to marketing your book or your written work, don't overlook one very important tool -- the business card. It's one of an author's most important tools, and they're not expensive, considering the many ways a business card can help you. If you have a website, have your website URL printed on the back so they can visit your site. A book cover has to grab the readers attention straight away and make enough of an impression to compel them to pick it up. Your book will most likely be surrounded by dozens of others all competing for the readers attention. Make yours stand out from the rest. I often say that books are more than the sum of their words. A real book is an entire entity-plot, organization, characterization, style, including all of the subheads for each one. Circling all of these things is the entire forest-the shape of the book. Publishing has traditionally been a struggle and those who have succeeded in having their books published were those who have contacts so that they can navigate among the many different agents who can sign their works into a publishing company. This is not happening any longer especially with the coming of Kindle publishing which literally anyone can do personally and in the convenience of your own home. Whether you created and are managing your own book tour or you've hired a publicist or book touring service, there are a few touring tips you should consider. Two of those tips are being a gracious guest and effective promoter. And so it goes. The publisher moves on and stays in business throughout the entire process with, 'Established since 1938,' over the door. The author after surrendering all rights to the publisher for 10% of sales, has a bundle of unsold books and, "I once had a best seller," rolling off his tongue. So now it's back to obscurity and his day job. The reality is, unless we as writers chart our own course and focus on an extremely profitable writing career, the above paragraph will ring true for us.
